In 1983, Pearl River residents faced a decision that would shape the future of their community. At the heart of this decision was the fate of the Central Avenue School Field, a green space that served as a gathering spot for generations. The question was whether to sell this property to real estate developers or preserve it as green space for future generations.
The school district proposed selling the land to Campbell S. House Inc., a real estate developer from Goshen, NY, for $325,000. The developer planned to construct a 36,000-square-foot King Kullen Supermarket with a parking lot that would consume most of the land. The development was seen by some as a way to boost the local economy and increase tax revenue. For others, it raised concerns, especially with an existing ShopRite nearby.
For generations, the Central Avenue School Field had been more than just a piece of land—it was a hub of community life. It served as a field for football, baseball, and soccer games. It was also the site for popular events such as car shows, carnivals, circuses, flea markets, art shows, farmers’ markets, charity events, and the annual Fourth of July fireworks display, drawing residents together to celebrate and enjoy the shared space.
A group of local businessmen, who were not affiliated with any political party, proposed transforming the Central Avenue School Field into a public park. Their plan included features like a bandstand, restrooms, and a refreshment stand, envisioning the space as a venue for concerts and community events. They argued that a park would better serve the long-term needs of the Pearl River community, offering a gathering space for all ages to enjoy.
On March 23, 1983, the Pearl River School District held a referendum where voters decided the fate of the 3.5-acre Central Avenue School Field. Despite the economic incentives offered by the proposed supermarket development, voters rejected the sale of the Central Avenue School Field. The defeat of the proposal was a clear statement that the residents of Pearl River valued their green space and wanted it preserved for future generations.
